Best Buy Challenges Amazon and Apple with US Cloud Music Expansion

Best Buy Co., the world’s largest consumer-electronics retailer, is expanding its U.K. online music platform to the U.S. in an attempt to challenge the cloud-based offerings from Amazon and Apple.

California based Catch Media Chief Executive Officer Yaacov Ben-Yaacov said today in a phone interview with Bloomberg that Best Buy’s U.S. Music Cloud service, powered by Catch Media Inc., is available for mobile devices such as Research In Motion, BlackBerry smartphone, and any other using Android technology.

Catch Media said on June 14 that the platform, marketed as “My Music Anywhere” in the UK, is designed to allow users to stream content they have purchased to a computer, mobile phone or tablet, eliminating the need to transfer and store computer files. The service is similar to Apple’s iCloud platform and Amazon’s Cloud Player.

Catch Media said the service is now available on all Android-powered devices in addition to BlackBerry units and Apple’s iOS platforms. Music Cloud can be downloaded at the Android platform online application store.
