Citrix Acquires Cloud.com to Strengthen its Presence in the Cloud

Citrix announced today it has completed its acquisition of Cloud.com, a provider of software-infrastructure platforms for cloud providers.

Cloud.com’s products which include the CloudStack product line, are designed for the deployment and management of cloud services. The acquisition gives Citrix a boost in its cloud-deployment efforts.

Mark Templeton, President and CEO, Citrix said “As the industry moves into the Cloud Era, Citrix is committed to leading the charge with powerful solutions that make the cloud more open, more secure, and more personal. We are delighted to welcome the Cloud.com team to the Citrix family to focus our combined efforts on helping customers of all sizes make a difference in business, and in the lives of their customers and employees.”

Citrix is facing some major competition in the space, as companies like Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft rush to provide businesses with cloud-computing solutions.

With that in mind, Citrix had publicly announced it has dedicated itself to building out an open cloud-computing portfolio, recently adding Project Olympus to its Citrix NetScaler Cloud Gateway and Netscaler Cloud Bridge. Project Olympus who is set to ship later in 2011, is the first commercialized version of the open-source cloud operating system OpenStack. Public-cloud providers will have the ability to leverage the platform to create customized features within a cloud infrastructure, while corporations and other entities can use the same tools in building out flexible private clouds.

In order to speed up the growth of its cloud computing portfolio Citrix needed to move fast and acquire Cloud.com. It will continue to support hypervisors such as Citrix XenServer and VMware vSphere, in addition to open-source ones such as Xen. Citrix apparently intends to expand that support to Microsoft’s Hyper-V and System Center.
